Sodium Distribution in Salt-stressed Citrus Rootstock Seedlings

Although citrus trees are considered relatively salt-sensitive, there are consistent differences in Na and Cl tolerance among different citrus rootstocks. We grew uniform seedlings of rough lemon (RL) and the more Na-tolerant Swingle citrumelo (SC) with and without 50 mM NaCl for 42 days. Salinity reduced leaf chlorophyll and plant transpiration rate (Ep) more in RL than SC. Confocal laser scan...

Response of Citrus Seedlings to Radopholus similis in Two Soils.

Radopholus similis was less pathogenic to greenhouse-grown citrus seedlings in Leon loamy sand than in Lakeland fine sand. This was not affected by different watering regimes. Seedling growth reduction by the burrowing nematode in either soil, compared with noninfected controls, was significant at the 1% level.

Weed Control Efficacy and Citrus Response to Flazasulfuron Applied Alone or in Combination with Other Herbicides

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the phytotoxicity of flazasulfuron on citrus species and efficacy on weeds when applied alone or in combination with other herbicides. Grapefruit was the most sensitive and tangerine was the least sensitive to flazasulfuron. Injury to grapefruit was 70% with the application of flazasulfuron at 0.20 kg a.i. ha at 60 DAT and was reduced (5%) when flaza...

Fertigation Frequency Affects Growth and Water and Nitrogen Use Efficiencies of Swingle Citrumelo Citrus Rootstock Seedlings

We determined if frequency of application of irrigation water plus fertilizer in solution (fertigation) could modify root and shoot growth along with growth per unit nitrogen (N) and water uptake of seedlings of the citrus rootstock Swingle citrumelo growing in a greenhouse. In the first experiment, all plants received the same amount of water with sufficient fertilizer N but in three irrigatio...

Characterization of Citrus Rootstock Responses to Tylenchulus semipenetrans (Cobb).

Citrus rootstocks which significantly limited the reproduction of Tylenchulus semipenetrans (Cobb) "Citrus" and "Poncirus" biotypes responded to infection by producing a hypersensitive-type response in the root hypodermis, wound periderm and/or cavities in the root cortex, and/or abnormal vacuoles in nurse cell cytoplasm. Rootstocks which limited nematode reproduction also had significantly few...
